The Egyptians used amulets and fetishes for many different reasons, including healing, protection, and magic.
The British Museum describes this ancient treasure in this way: "Amulet of Seshat: in opaque white glass of the goddess Seshat, matt finish, standing, facing left. In her right hand the goddess clasps a reed pen and in her left a long object, either a branch or a roll of papyrus, extending at a diagonal to about the level of the shoulders. On top of the head is a star supported by a rod. Curled wig. Voluptuous body with prominent breasts. Back flat."
While larger images of this goddess may not have been accessible to the ancient devotees who were not allowed in the inner sanctum of temples, smaller religious items such an amulets also allowed the everyday cicitens to connect with Seshat.
