If you can't get to Egypt, and you can't visit a museum, an altar is one way to establish a relationship with Seshat.
An altar can be used as a home base for spiritual activity. Just as ancient Eyptians found ways to honor the Divine when they could not enter the inner sanctum of the temple, you can have an altar that is like a little sacred space for prayers, rituals, and setting forth your writing intentions.
Create an altar close to your desk or in an area where you can see it every day during your quiet time, or meditation time. Place an icon or image of Seshat on the altar.
Surround her with offerings from her culture. Also include symbols of writing, such as a scroll, a feather pen, or a new pencil. Include flowers and candles, and incense if you like. Add anything that you feel will encourage your writing, such as crystals, or a favorite book by a favorite author.
As the seasons change, you can freshen up the altar to connect with the energy of that time of the year. Altars can be large or small, and you can have more than one.
You can select some of your favorite things from the list of Seshat's Symbols on the following page, or add anything that you find inspiring.
Some ideas:
- Statue or art of Seshat or Seshat and Thoth
- Incense holder and incense
- Candle holders and candles
- Bell or chime
- Items that relate to the creative energy you want to call in
- Written prayer to the goddess that is rolled up in a scroll
- Empowering piece of jewelry
- Items representing the four elements — air, fire, water, and earth
- Items representing the four directions — east, south, west, and north
- Something that represents the spirits of within, above, and below
- Something that represents protection
- Something that represents success (like a photo of a book contract)
An altar can be both a stable and fluid foundation for your spiritual practice. It can be something that is always there for you, as a tool for your ongoing connection to Seshat and all aspects of the Divine. But you can change it, rearrange it, and wipe it clean when you want to start again.
